New Hire Spotlight: Daniel Martinez

Written by Luis Estrada

Our haku team is growing quickly! The newest member of the team is Daniel Martinez. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Daniel and his family moved here to Miami when he was 2 years old. He joins us as an Associate Software Engineer with an engineering degree from FIU. Let’s get to know Daniel.

What is your role with haku?

My title is Associate Software Engineer and I’m going to be working on our apps, solving bugs, feature enhancements, UI changes and that sort of stuff.

Where would you see yourself in 5-10 years?

I think I’ll still be a developer for sure, but obviously increasing to senior level or something along those lines, expanding my work in all aspects of web development.

What is a professional skill or a hobby you would like to learn?

I would say for a professional skill, mobile app development. A lot of the underlying concepts are the same to web dev but I would like to learn that to expand my career.

And as a hobby, running. I have run before but not consistently or competitively. I could train to do a marathon or half marathon, maybe even one of our clients' events. It seems great but I’ve never really had the opportunity to do it.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

A perfect day for me would be spending time with my family, my girlfriend and my dog, just hanging out. Maybe playing some sort of sport like basketball or soccer with friends. And then going out to eat dinner at a nice restaurant.

Can you share a great piece of advice you have received or you keep in mind?

Just to always keep an open mind and a curious mindset to try to pick up new knowledge. Try to learn more if you're not confident on something. That’s the mentality I always like to have.

What is your favorite place you have traveled to?

I visited Los Angeles with my girlfriend and I loved it. The weather was amazing and its definitely a unique landscape compared to Miami, with so many peaks and valleys.

What would be the first thing you did if you won the lottery?

Probably buy a house for my family. Maybe for me, too.

How would you define success?

I would define it as being happy in your day to day life and just pushing yourself to constantly learn and improve and do something meaningful.

What is something that you think is overrated and underrated?

Baseball is overrated. I never picked up on it. Just feels kind of boring to me. I don't feel like anyone watches baseball anymore.

Underrated - Venezuelan food. It has a lot of variety and arepas are amazing. Cachapas are so good too.

So at haku, we have some great nicknames and stories behind them. Do you have a nickname and how did it start?

So it’s a funny story. When I was younger, my hair was really blonde and my older brother started calling me Blondie. But now, people who know me from back then still call me that even though it makes no sense anymore.
