Fundraising Starts with Confidence
You don’t have to be a “natural” to be successful.
For some runners, fundraising can be an exciting and energizing experience. For others, it’s absolutely intimidating, especially if asking for donations is new territory.
The good news? Fundraising confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you build.
Whether you’re a seasoned fundraiser or brand new to this process, there are practical ways to overcome hesitation and feel more comfortable sharing your story and making your ask.
Why Confidence MattersWhen you approach fundraising with clarity and confidence, people respond.
Donors aren’t just giving to a cause, they’re responding to your belief in it. If you feel unsure or apologetic when asking, that uncertainty can come through. But when you’re grounded in why you’re running and why Mercy Home matters to you, the ask feels natural.
Tips for Building Fundraising Confidence
1. Stay Involved in Your CommunityThe more connected you are, the more natural fundraising becomes.
Staying active in your workplace, neighborhood, faith community, social circles, or professional networks expands your reach and builds genuine relationships. Fundraising is easier when you’re inviting people into something meaningful rather than making a cold ask.
Strong networks grow over time. Start by showing up consistently.
2. Don’t Take Rejection PersonallyNot everyone will give, that’s okay! A “no” is not a reflection of you, your effort, or the value of Mercy Home’s mission. People may have other commitments, financial constraints, or timing conflicts. Rejection is part of the process, not a verdict. The most successful fundraisers aren’t those who never hear “no.” They’re the ones who keep going anyway.
3. Lean Into the Heroes CommunityYou’re not doing this alone.
Connecting with fellow Heroes runners can make a huge difference. Ask seasoned fundraisers what has worked for them. Share ideas. Compare notes. Team events and group activities are great opportunities to learn and build confidence together.
Sometimes the best way to overcome hesitation is hearing, “I felt that way too.”
