Rules of the Road: Safety Tips for Group or Solo Runs

Running buddies are the best kind of support system—they keep you motivated, make the miles fly by, and add a layer of safety to your road running routine. Whether you're running solo, with San Diego Track Club, or meeting up with a few friends, a smooth run requires a few friendly ground rules. These tips are especially helpful when exploring those scenic San Diego routes!

Here are 5 easy tips to keep you and your running crew happy, healthy, and safe on the road.

1. Follow the Rules of the Road

Traffic rules apply to us too, friends! Don't be "that runner" who sprints across a busy street against a red light. Be predictable, stop at signals, and always make eye contact with drivers. If there's no sidewalk, stick to the right side and face the traffic so you can see cars approaching and react accordingly.

2. Know Where You're Going (Mostly!)

No one wants to play "Follow the Leader" with a lost leader! Before you head out, have a general idea of the route (the routes are in the weekly emails, sent every Tuesday for RnR participants), and let others know if you’re going to take a detour. This prevents people from getting lost if they get separated and helps you figure out turnaround points.

3. Sparkle and Shine (When It's Dark)

If you're running before sunrise or after sunset, dress like you're going to a disco party. We're talking bright colors, reflective gear, and lights! Also, keep one earbud out or try bone conduction headphones. You need to be able to hear that enthusiastic cyclist yell "On your left!"

4. Share the Space with Others

Running paths and sidewalks are meant for everyone! Be mindful of walkers, other runners, and bikers. Stick to running two abreast at most. When things get narrow, or a car needs to pass, transition into single-file line.

5. Be the Hazard Hype Person

Protect your pack by calling out obstacles like they're a concert announcement! A quick "Pothole right!", "Car back!", or "Watch that branch!" can save someone from a nasty fall. Good communication prevents bad wipeouts.

Bonus Tips: Solo Runner Edition

Same rules apply when flying solo! Here are a few extra tips for when it's just you and the road:

  • Share Your Game Plan - Before you head out, give a quick heads-up to a friend or family member. A simple text like, “Hitting the 5-mile loop, back in an hour!” works wonders. If you’re a tech fan, using a location-sharing app is a great "set it and forget it" way to stay connected.
  • Stick to the Popular Spots - When you're by yourself, choose the "highlight reel" routes. Stick to well-traveled paths and familiar neighborhoods where there are plenty of other people around. It’s more fun for people-watching anyway, and it ensures you're never truly alone if you need a hand or a quick direction.
  • Trust the Vibe - Your intuition is like a built-in running coach. If a specific path feels a little off or a street is darker than you expected, don't sweat it—just pivot! Taking a different turn or heading back to a busier area is a smart, pro-runner move that keeps the vibes high and the run stress-free.

Keep these tips in mind, and your group runs—whether casual meetups or official SDTC runs—will be all high-fives and smiles. And if you want to join us for our next group run, find upcoming SDTC workouts on our Strava page and check our Tips for the Track blog post.
