The Art of the Shakeout Run: Why Your Pre-Race Ritual Matters

The days before a big race is usually a whirlwind of nerves, carb-loading, and obsessive weather-checking. While your training plan might say “rest" the day or two before your race, many runners swear by one final, low-stakes ritual: the shakeout run. This isn't a workout; it is a gentle, purposeful transition from the taper to the starting line.

Read on for a few tips for planning your pre-race shakeout. Or better yet, join us for a community shakeout run before the La Jolla Half on Thursday May 14th. RSVP on Strava

Pro-Tips for a Perfect Shakeout

  • Keep it short: 20 to 30 minutes is plenty.
  • Keep it conversational: This is not a workout; you should be able to maintain a conversational pace.
  • Add strides: Finish with 2–4 "strides" (quick 100m accelerations) to find your race pace rhythm.

The Power of the Social Shakeout

While the physical benefits are real, the mental game is where the shakeout truly shines—especially with a group shakeout event. Here’s why you should join us for a pre-race social shakeout on Thursday May 14, 2026.

  • Travel Recovery: If you’ve just had a long flight or car ride, join us to "loosen the legs" from travel stiffness.
  • Course Preview: Use these easy miles to preview the final stretch of the course or scout the finish area so there are no surprises on race day.
  • Drowning Out the Inner Critic: Pre-race anxiety often peaks the day before. Joining a group shakeout replaces internal "what-ifs" with external conversation.
  • Pacing by Proxy: It is easy to accidentally run too fast when you’re nervous. Running with a group encourages you to keep the pace "social"—meaning you should be able to chat easily without getting winded.

  • Community Calm: There is a unique comfort in being surrounded by people who are just as nervous as you are. Sharing a few easy miles reminds you that you’re part of a community, not just a competitor.
